Columbus Half-Marathon 2012
This past Sunday I got myself a bona fide hat-trick finishing my third half-marathon this year. I ran the Columbus Half in 2 hours 25 minutes. This one started much earlier than the other two. I was in corral E because I am slow.
I am not totally sure why I got the half-marathon bug. I am not sporty and I don’t get excited about team spirit. I played soccer in high school, hated games,...

Acorn Doll Blanket Pattern →
This is a very quick and easy pattern. It only took me a few days to knit it up.

30 Realizations Before 30
These are in no particular order.
Dachshund is pronounced DAHKS-huunt not DASH-hound. If you think this is a hilarious story you would be correct.
I have a size ten, hour-glass figure that weighs what it is going to weigh and age the way it is going to age. To try and make my body into any other shape, size, or look is futile and an affront to the healthy, strong, and functional body I have been...

30 Activities Before 30
Basically, each of the activities reverberates to the present and adds a piece to the whole picture of me.
Rode horses - I was into horses in a big way. It was the thing that made me feel in control and it was the first thing I was really good at.
Built a lean-to - I decided one morning that I would build a lean-to in the back yard. I was reading My Side of the Mountain and it seemed like just...

30 Places Before 30
I have been hot on place lately. I have finally had to accept the fact that I travel. I travel more than most people even if it is mostly around the state and sometimes the U.S. and mostly for work. I have been some pretty amazing places though, and had some transformative experiences.
Syracuse, NY - I was born here in 1982. I don’t remember much of living here - just a few snippets. I am...

Werftpfuhl, Germany
In August 2008 I traveled with a group of women I have come to lovingly call “my feminists” to Germany for a conference on gender and emancipation in the diverse countries of Syria, Sudan, Germany, and the United States. It was, to say the least, a strange, unsettling experience. Though I have wrote sparingly about those thirteen days, it is something that hovers always present....

30 Books Before 30
My father is a novelist. Growing up books were never in short supply. His publisher and editor would often send him home with a giant box of books for my sister and me. Both of us were voracious readers and still are. Recently Dad got me a Nook as an early birthday present. I had resisted the idea of digital books because, at the risk of sounding like an asshole, there is something really special...

30 before 30
I will admit it, I freakin’ love this movie - 13 Going on 30. It is ridiculous and it makes me laugh. It also encompasses a little of what I am feeling right now. By chance I stumbled on a list of 30 books to read before turning 30. I looked it over and wasn’t overly impressed. So I began searching the web for other examples of 30 before 30 lists - things to do, movies to see, books...

The Lost City of Z
I just finished listening to The Lost City of Z by David Grann. This book had a little bit of everything I love. Exploration; gross-out medical conditions; discussions of colonialism and White’s distorted perceptions of Native American worlds; turn-of-the-century male bravado; spiritualism; and obsession! I was in heaven! As soon as they began discussing how maggots invaded the explorers...

Temper the Rage →
Last night in a fit of rage I drove to Lowes and bought squirrel repellent. The little bastard got into the pots on the front porch. Bold. Dave kept saying, “do you have to go right now?” Yes, Dave, I do. It was purely an emotional purchase but I will tell you - the second I started spraying that vinegar-y liquid I felt a rush of pure relief and satisfaction. Now we play the...
